The Hobbit - Jules Bass, Arthur Rankin Jr, 1977

Bilbo Baggins, a well to do Hobbit, is recruited by the wizard Gandalf to join thirteen dwarves on a journey to reclaim their home from a fire breathing dragon.

My first taste of the land of Middle Earth, and it has always been a favorite of mine ever since. Great music, great watercolor backgrounds, and top notch animation. This movie perfectly captures Tolkien's Middle Earth long before the others came along.

The big question is how will Peter Jackson's version compare to this? The dark and series tone of Jackson's Lord of the Rings might not match the lighthearted fairy tale of The Hobbit in the goofy childish way this one does.

Anyway, it's a wonderful little gateway into the world of Tolkien, far more important back when there wasn't so much of it around. It's nice nostalgia nowadays even if the simplified plot is a little silly.
